Meet the newest member of the Boston Celtics: Von Wafer

Lakers

Following a heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on June 17th, 2010 the future of the Boston Celtics franchise was unknown. Would Danny Ainge choose to bring back the band that helped raise banner seventeen, or would he decide to reload the squad with younger talent? At the time the answer to that question was unclear.

Now, a little over a month later, it is clear. Danny, Doc (Rivers), Paul (Pierce), Ray (Allen), and the rest of the band are ready to give it one (or two) more shot(s).

The core is back, Nate Robinson is back, and Marquis Daniels is back. Throw in offseason acquisition Jermaine O'Neal, and draft pick Avery Bradley, and the Celtics roster was now 11 deep. That was until today.

According to Alex Kennedy of Hoops World, the Celtics have signed free agent, and former Houston Rockets guard, Von Wafer. Wafer is a 6'5" guard who spent the majority of last season playing overseas. His last season in an NBA uniform was in 2008, with the Rockets, when he averaged 9.7 points in 19 minutes per game.

Here is the official news via Hoops World:

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract, according to sources close to the situation. The deal will be fully guaranteed and worth the veteran’s minimum.

The focus for the Celtics now should shift towards adding another big man. With the signing of Wafer, the Celtics are now very deep at the guard position. Wafer, Daniels, Robinson, and Bradley are all guys who will get a shot at the guard position off the bench.

Wafer does have a reputation of having some attitude problems, but so far he seems very pleased to be joining the Celtics.

Via Wafer's Twitter account:

Thank u god thank u so so so so much ur so good to me yes thank u mr ainge thank u coach rivers thank u thank u thank thank u all

If he can keep his act together I'm all for this signing. I'm a little bummed out we didn't get Eddie (House) back but I'll get over it. For the veterans minimum this guy could end up being a steal.

Another tweener ? I sit, watching replayed over & over, Finals Celtics and Lakers 2010 ; and its always VERY clear to me, about our “size” problem vs the size of the Laker’s team. C’mon. I know we did go 3 to 4 against Lakers, and I appreciate our roster (then). So, including adding Jermaine O’Neal-which is a shaky issue (age, and injury-issues), why do we seem having a fixation on keeping on adding ‘tweeners? To go through the playoffs yearly, its only realistic that the Cs must go through the best in the West, to attain the banner. The Lakers are not the only West team having well-stocked size and athleticism. I say, we were doing great to win it all in ’08. I’m all about Red Auerbach, and winning banners. Reality is “demanding”.

Thanks for the comment Joe. Right now, with Perk’s return unclear, I have to agree with you that we need size. The only problem is that there is not much out there right now, unless you consider Kwame Brown something….

Jermaine Oneal was pretty solid..LIKE 5-6 yrs ago. You can blame the Refs for the NBA finals but you cant blame the fact that Celtics really didnt get much younger or athletic this off-season. Wafer is your typical bench guy, I dont see him making any real noise this season.

I still think Jermaine has a little bit in the tank. By bringing back “The Big Three” and guys like Jermaine O’Neal Danny Ainge made it pretty clear he’s putting together a team with a very small window. One, maybe two years, at the most. As far as Von Wafer goes, if he stays healthy and keeps a good attitude he could wind up being an OK replacement for Tony Allen.
