Following a heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on June 17th, 2010 the future of the Boston Celtics franchise was unknown. Would Danny Ainge choose to bring back the band that helped raise banner seventeen, or would he decide to reload the squad with younger talent? At the time the answer to that question was unclear.
Now, a little over a month later, it is clear. Danny, Doc (Rivers), Paul (Pierce), Ray (Allen), and the rest of the band are ready to give it one (or two) more shot(s).
The core is back, Nate Robinson is back, and Marquis Daniels is back. Throw in offseason acquisition Jermaine O'Neal, and draft pick Avery Bradley, and the Celtics roster was now 11 deep. That was until today.
According to Alex Kennedy of Hoops World, the Celtics have signed free agent, and former Houston Rockets guard, Von Wafer. Wafer is a 6'5" guard who spent the majority of last season playing overseas. His last season in an NBA uniform was in 2008, with the Rockets, when he averaged 9.7 points in 19 minutes per game.
Here is the official news via Hoops World:
The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract, according to sources close to the situation. The deal will be fully guaranteed and worth the veteran’s minimum.
The focus for the Celtics now should shift towards adding another big man. With the signing of Wafer, the Celtics are now very deep at the guard position. Wafer, Daniels, Robinson, and Bradley are all guys who will get a shot at the guard position off the bench.
Wafer does have a reputation of having some attitude problems, but so far he seems very pleased to be joining the Celtics.
Thank u god thank u so so so so much ur so good to me yes thank u mr ainge thank u coach rivers thank u thank u thank thank u all
If he can keep his act together I'm all for this signing. I'm a little bummed out we didn't get Eddie (House) back but I'll get over it. For the veterans minimum this guy could end up being a steal.
